Coriander, or 'dhania' as it is popularly called, is available throughout the year. It provides a fragrant flavour similar to that of citrus peel and sage.
The coriander plant bears fruit that contains two seeds which, when dried, are the portions used as the dried spice. When ripe, the seeds are yellowish-brown in colour with vertical ridges. Coriander seeds are available whole or in ground powder form.
Coriander has traditionally been referred to as an "anti-diabetic" plant in Europe. In parts of India, it has been used for its anti-inflammatory properties. Coriander has also recently been studied for its cholesterol-lowering effects.
