Holistic Management of Chickungunya

Chikungunya is a kind of viral-infect bond infection which is transmitted, as in malaria, by mosquito. The symptoms are similar to that of dengue fever. Usually the symptoms last for 3-5 days, followed by prolonged pain and swelling in joints of extremities. Usually this pain may linger on for months or, even, years. In menopausal and post meno- pausal women Chikungunya causes severe joint damage or the infection may lead to arthritis.

Common signs and symptoms

  1. Fever (High fever) - Typically lasts 2- 5 days
  2. Chills
  3. Vomiting
  4. Diarrhoea
  5. Pain and swelling in the joints
  6. Pain throughout the body
  7. Headache
  8. Conjunctivitis
  9. Mild photophobia

Common cause
A virus named "Alpha" is responsible for this disorder. This virus is transmitted through Aedes mosquito. In Ayurveda, this condition is attributed to Vata type of joint pain, hence the treatment suggested is Vata management therapies and medicines or diet.

Ayurveda`s approach is considered to be the best approach for Chikungunya. Many Allopathic doctors suggest going for Ayurvedic medicines and therapies for this condition. Government of India is distributing preventive and promotive Ayurvedic medicines for this condition across the nation through PHC, District and other hospitals.

Ayurveda recommends therapies like Pzhichil, Abyanga, Sweda, Navara Kizhi for the complete cure and rehabilitation from this condition.

Home remedies

  1. Water processed with dry ginger and cumin seeds are effective in reducing the fever and body pain.
  2. Application of any oil followed by warm water fomentation is also beneficial.
  3. Extract of juice of NONI - twice daily before food is also effective.

Conclusion
Ayurveda and other holistic therapies can prevent and manage this condition very effectively. However preventing the disorder completely from the society is every one`s responsibility. Keeping the environment clean and clear is very important.
