Method
  1. Stir shortening to soften.
  2. Add sugar and cream thoroughly.
  3. Add egg and vanilla essence and beat well.
  4. Sieve flour, soda and salt.
  5. Add dates to the water and cook.
  6. Add sieved ingredients to the creamed mixture alternately with date mixture, beating after each addition. Add walnuts.
  7. Bake in paper-lined 9x9x2 inch pan at 350°F for about 30-40 mins.
Ingredients:
1 2/3 cups - flour
½ cup - shortening
1 cup - sugar
1 cup - chopped dates
½ - chopped walnuts
1 - egg
1 tsp - boiling water
1 tsp - vanilla essence
1 tsp - soda
¼ tsp - salt
