It is common knowledge that avoiding certain foods can lower your bad cholesterol levels. Limiting oil intake, cutting down on deep-fried snacks and fat-laden sweets are some trends followed to keep cholesterol levels in check. But, did you know that eating certain foods can also help control bad cholesterol?

Spinach and other dark, leafy vegetables contain anti-oxidants that can actually prevent buildup of cholesterol in the arteries. Here`s an easy recipe you can serve with roti or rice:

Dal palak

Ingredients:

1 bunch - palak/spinach, chopped 1/2 cup - toor dal
1/2 cup - moong dal
1 tsp - ginger garlic paste
1 tsp - coriander powder
1 tsp - chilli powder
1/2 tsp - turmeric powder
1 tsp - mustard seeds
1 tsp - cumin seeds
1 - onion
1 - tomato

Method:

Heat oil in a pressure pan; add mustard and add cumin seeds; allow them to splutter.
Add the onions and fry till translucent.
Add the ginger & garlic paste.
Add the tomatoes and cook till they are mushy and then add the coriander and chilli powder.
Add the lentils and cook till they are soft.
Release the steam and add chopped spinach and pressure cook for a whistle more.
Add enough water and simmer for a minute.
Garnish with cilantro. It goes well with hot rice, roti or chapati.
