Vitamin D

Vitamin D is intimately connected with the metabolism of calcium and phosphorous. It promotes the absorption of calcium from the intestines and helps in materialisation of bones. Exposing the skin to the sun enables the ultra violet rays to react on the skins surface oils to produce vitamin D.
Those with fair skin are able to produce more vitamin D since more of the suns ultra violet rays are able to penetrate fairer skin. Sunshine is the richest source. Vitamin D is also present in small quantities in milk, fish such as herring, mackerel, salmon, sardine and tuna. Foods of plant origin don`t contain vitamin D.
