Uluthamparuppu Chutney (Urad dal Chutney)

Method
  1. Saute onions, chillies, urad dal, coconut, tomatoes and coriander
  2. Grind coarsely the sauted ingredients.
  3. Temper the chutney with the items under tempering.
  4. Serve with idlies and dosas
Ingredients:
1/8 cup - uluthamparuppu/urad dal/skinned black gram (whole or split)
1 medium sized - tomato
6-7 - shallots (You can substitute with half of a big onion if you don`t have small onions)
8-10 - green chillies (Adjust according to your spice level. Can substitute with dry red chilies)
Fresh coriander, a generous bunch
1/2 cup - shredded coconut (optional)
1 tsp - mustard seeds (optional)
1 tsp - salt
1/2 cup - water
5 tsp - oil

To temper:
3 tsp - sesame oil (Gingely oil or any cooking oil)
1/2 tsp - mustard seeds
1/2 tsp - urad dal (optional)
1 sprig - curry leaves
1/8 tsp - hing/Asafoetida/Perungayam
