Method
  1. Clean and wash the dal.
  2. Soak the dal for about 20 minutes.
  3. Add salt and turmeric powder to the dal.
  4. Pressure cook the dal with sufficient water for about 3-4 whistles.
  5. Mash the dal gently.
  6. In a small kadai, heat the ghee.
  7. Add the chopped onions, tomatoes and garlic.
  8. Mix well. Stir fry for a few minutes.
  9. Add asafoetida and chopped green chilies.
  10. Add this to the dal and mix well.
  11. Add the garam masala. Mix well.
  12. Boil the dal for 3-4 minutes.
  13. Garnish with coriander leaves.
  14. Serve hot with hot rotis and steamed rice.
Ingredients:
200 grams - tur dal
tsp - turmeric powder
2 tsp - ghee
2 - medium sized onions (finely chopped)
3 to 4 flakes - garlic (finely chopped)
2 to 3 - medium tomatoes (finely chopped
tsp - asafetida
2 to 3 - green chilies (finely chopped)
1 tsp - garam masala
1 or 2 tsp - fresh coriander leaves (finely chopped)
sufficient water to cook
salt to taste
