Simple garlicky tamarind dal

Method
  1. Cook dal with methi seeds and turmeric powder in a pressure cooker till 2 to 3 whistles, mash the dal well and keep aside.
  2. Heat oil, add turmeric powder, mustard seeds, cumin, red chilli, garlic and curry leaves.
  3. Fry till seeds crackle and dal turns light brown.
  4. Add onion pieces and green chillies, fry till onion turns pink.
  5. Add red chilli powder, mix well.
  6. Add mashed dal, tamarind paste, salt and 150ml water.
  7. Let it boil for 3 to 4mins under sim.
  8. Sprinkle coriander and remove.
  9. Serve with hot plain rice with a tsp of home made ghee.

Tip: When the red chillies are fried to a dark brown they taste great while eating (when they are crushed and mixed with dal and rice)

Ingredients:
350gms - tur dal
1 medium - onion, sliced fine
10 cloves - peeled and crushed garlic
1/2 tsp - methi/fenugreek seeds
1 tbsp - thick tamarind paste
2 - green chillies, cut vertically into 2
1/2 tsp - mustard seeds
1 tsp - urad dal, split
1/2 tsp - cuminv 8-10 - curry leaves
4 - red chillies
1 tsp - red chilli powder
1/2 tbsp - chopped coriander leaves
1/4 tsp - turmeric powder
Asafoetida, a pinch
Salt
2 tbsp - oil
