Method

Step 1

  1. Sieve rice flour and salt in a broad plate; add boiling water little by little and keep mixing with spatula.
  2. Knead the mixture with hand to make a soft dough.

Step 2

  1. Coarsely grind soaked chana dal without water and mix with all other ingredients.
  2. Make small balls of the dough and roll them into round shapes.
  3. Keep a spoonfull of filing in the centre of rolled out the dough; fold and shape like a modak.
  4. Place the modaks on a greased plate and steam in a steamer or pressure cooker for 7 to 8 minutes on a low flame.
  5. Remove and serve hot.

Ingredients for filling:
1 cup - chana dal (soaked)
1 tbsp - carrot (grated)
1 tbsp - beans, finely chopped
1 tbsp - capsicum, finely chopped
1 tbsp - green peas, boiled and crushed
1 tbsp - sweet corn, boiled
1 tbsp - onion, finely chopped
1 tsp - ginger and garlic paste
1 tbsp - green chillies, minced
1/2 tsp - cinnamon and cloves powder
2 tsp - grated coconut
Salt to taste

Ingredients to make covering:
1 cup - rice flour
Salt, a pinch
Water as required
